Corporal Gabriel S. Guzman, a reconnaissance man serving with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, stands at attention before receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal during a ceremony on base Monday.

On June 8, the 20-year-old  Riverside native assisted gravely injured victims of a two-vehicle head-on collision on Alabama State Route 165. Guzman and his buddy, Cpl. Joshua Kulesza, immediately moved to a smoking and crushed van and administered first aid to a husband and wife. The man suffered serious burns, but directed Guzman to help his wife, who suffered from a neck injury. Together, they braced the injured woman and helped her out of the vehicle.
