Staying Alive: Firefighters Teach CPR to Market Goers

The Oceanside Fire Department trained 173 people in the use of CPR and the automated external defibrillator during Thursday's Farmers Market.

As part of San Diego's Countywide Sidewalk CPR Day, Oceanside firefighters taught hands-only CPR and the use of the automated external defibrillator to 173 attendees of the Thursday .

Lynne Seabloom, the department's Emergency Medical Services manager, was among the paramedics teaching the 10-minute classes and taught people to sing the Bee Gees song "Staying Alive" to help keep a rhythm during chest compressions instead of counting.

That's an especially useful technique for kids, said Brady Falk, 10, of Chandler, AZ.
