Robert Robbins Identified as Man Killed in Oceanside Shooting

Diego Martinzez, 20, has been arrested in connection with Thursday morning's shooting death of Robert Robbins in Oceanside.

A man was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting early today of a 47-year-old man and the wounding of the victim's 49- year-old girlfriend in Oceanside.

A woman was reported screaming for help at Calle Solimar and Calle Mariposa around 12:20 a.m., according to Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Mata.

Police found a wounded woman sitting in a truck that was stopped and facing oncoming traffic east of the intersection. A man was lying in a driveway in the 300 block of Calle Mariposa, across the street, Mata said.

Medics took the woman to a hospital, and police said she was expected to survive. The man died at the scene.

Police did not immediately release the victims' names, although family members identified the man as Robert Robbins, according to broadcast reports.

Robbins' mother Maria told 10News the victims were her son, who she called Robbie, and his girlfriend Lisa Baget.

Police said their investigation led officers to the home of Diego Martinez, 20, who was arrested without incident after officers obtained a search warrant and surrounded his home in the 4700 block of Calle Solimar, near the shooting scene, Mata said.

Officers recovered a rifle during the search, but it was unknown if the weapon was used in the shootings, Mata said.

Police had not established the motive for the shooting, and the relationship -- if any -- between the suspect and the victims is unknown, Mata said.

Martinez was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, according to jail records. He was scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
