Self-Proclaimed 'Godfather of Camp Pendleton' Charged with Bribery

Natividad Lara Cervantes, 64, is accused of receiving cash and remodeling work on a condominium.

The supervisor of construction and service contracts at Camp Pendleton has been charged with bribery of a public official, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced today.

Natividad Lara Cervantes, a 64-year-old civilian Defense Department employee, learned of the charge in his initial appearance in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Major.

Prosecutors allege that Cervantes referred to himself as the "Godfather of Camp Pendleton" as he extorted bribes from businesses seeking to conduct business on the sprawling Marine base in northern San Diego County -- beginning in September 2008.

The San Diego resident is accused of receiving cash and remodeling work on a condominium.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Cervantes was arrested March 28 when he was given a $10,000 cash payment that was an installment on a $40,000 bribe. The alleged kickback he was to receive was for helping a company receive a $4 million contract from the base.

However, the person who handed the defendant the money was described by prosecutors as "a cooperating witness."

"Given the large military presence in San Diego, it is imperative that this office ensure that the government contracting process is free from bribery and undue influence," U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy said. "There must be a level playing field free from corruption for all government contractors."

Cervantes next court appearance is set for May 10. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
