A group of 15 volunteers, some traveling as far as an hour away, gathered on Wednesday at the Abby Reinke Community Center on Camp Pendleton to sew military-themed pillows for hospice veterans.

Oceanside High School graduate Destiny Kruse, 22, works at San Diego home care company and is married to a Marine.

“I understand the sacrifices (service members) make because of my husband, but God knows what our older service members have gone through — so much more than our men and women today,” she said. “Volunteering like this is my way of saying thank you to my husband, as well as the other service members. Maybe someday someone will make him a pillow.”

The pillows will be used for honor ceremonies as part of the LightBridge Hospice Veteran Program to thank Veterans (on hospice) for their service before they pass. A plaque, acknowledging the years of service, is also given to the veteran by a service member at each one of these events.
