When the Battle of the Mariachis had its first event at Mission San Juan Capistrano 15 years ago, organizer Mechelle CQ Lawrence Adam realized that the hundreds of young mariachi students in the competition had nothing to do while waiting for judges to declare the winners. She suggested that the orchestral musicians play something together. Trumpets, guitars, violins, and singers joined in creating a final song that has become a stirring highlight of the event. The mariachi festival will be on May 14, after a two-year pandemic break. The show is open to the public but is already sold out, organizers said, but they have started a waitlist.
