Here are the top stories today in Orange County:
- The Orange County Sheriff's Department will offer two Teen Academy workshops this summer for young adults ages 16-18. In the two-day workshops, students can have "a fun, hands-on experience" learning how the O.C. Sheriff's Department works. Students will learn everything from traffic laws and K-9 dogs, to how the police helicopters help conduct crime scene investigations, and more. The first workshop will be from June 27 to July 1, and the second workshop will be from July 18 to 22. You can find out more here: (Facebook)
- More than 1,500 SoCal residents visited the O.C. Zoo to submit names for two cute orphaned mountain lion cub sisters. The cubs were recently found in O.C. without their mother. They were rescued and nursed back to health by the experienced zoo staff. Zoo officials said they received many wonderful name ideas, and it will be "difficult" narrowing it down to a few finalists. Voting took place at the new Large Mammal Exhibit through Monday. We — and the cubs — will have to wait to find out what their new names will be. (Instagram)
- In a related story, in an O.C. Zoo Instagram page, a contributor posted that officials "caught a mountain lion in my backyard in Newport Beach last Friday! Beautiful animals." The usually shy big cats are protected under the California Wildlife Protection Act of 1990. In California, mountain lions are losing habitat and are at risk of becoming extinct as they are increasingly cut off by freeways from natural roaming areas where they would find mates, environmental officials said.
