Here are the top stories today in Orange County:

  1. Police are asking for your help to find the driver of a car that struck and killed a pedestrian in Stanton early Sunday morning. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the incident took place around 2:45 a.m. The pedestrian was a woman in her 50s. Police say a car believed to be a 2007 to 2009 Toyota Camry left the scene after striking the woman before deputies arrived. Anyone with information is asked to call the OCSD Dispatch at 714-647-7000. You can read more here: (orangecountytribune.com)
  2. Bravo to a heroic neighbor, who is credited with saving a man's life after he heard cries for help. According to the Orange County Fire Authority, a blaze broke out at a home in the 13000 block of Thunderbird Drive around 1:30 p.m., northwest of Seal Beach and Westminster boulevards. The citizen heard his neighbor yelling for help and immediately ran over, helping him escape from his home and the fire. You can read more here:(orangecountytribune.com)
  3. If you look at the hillside around you, you just may be seeing the clash of the earth's plates miles beneath the place you are looking at. Hills that are "pushed up" from deep collisions underneath the ground, that is from geologic uplift. You can see a great example of this in the Irvine Ranch Open Space, according to a recent Instagram post by OC Parks. Geologists say you can tell when uplift has occurred because layers of the "pushed up" hill are at an angle. If you know what to look for, you can see where land was pushed up in the landscape around us. (Instagram)
  4. There's more than one way to catch a thief, and Costa Mesa wants catalytic converter thieves to know they have set the bait. When thefts of catalytic converters more than doubled in the city in one year, Costa Mesa Police announced they would have bait cars that are monitored by undercover officers waiting for catalytic-converter thieves. Police set up electronic signs on Newport Boulevard and Fair Drive, and Adams Avenue and Albatross Drive, announcing “BAIT CARS IN THE AREA.” The Police Department said in a Facebook post that the operation to catch the would-be thieves kicked off on Thursday, Jan. 13. Other agencies have used bait programs to discourage car thieves, and in Anaheim, police set up bait boxes with tracking devices to arrest package thieves. You can read more here: (OC Register)

Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera’s drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.
