- A surprise onsite inspection by state regulators in March of food services at the Orange County Jail found that the kitchens were clean, orderly, well-stocked "and contained food items that were consistent with grocery store standards.” They found no moldy or improperly stored food as had been reported by a coalition of activist groups in December alleging inmates had been served cold and moldy food for years, violating state regulations. The state, along with the public health authority, said they will continue monitoring the Sheriff’s Department’s food for quality and methods of meal delivery, and "will have a follow-up visit this month." - The Shea Therapeutic Riding Center in San Juan Capistrano is working with the South Orange County Vet Center to help veterans readjust to life at home and with their day-to-day struggles. Paul Worley, a retired highly decorated Marine veteran, came to the center looking for help to readjust to civilian life. He said a horse named Huckleberry was of his favorites at the San Juan Capistrano Center, adding, “He’s good to me even if I don’t deserve it.” Worley has been a regular at the San Juan Capistrano riding center for a year. - Spring is the perfect time to spend time in nature. If you love hiking, biking, or taking a leisurely walk, Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park is a great place to "relax and enjoy nature," said OC Parks. Even if all you want to do is look for wildlife, find native plants, or listen to water trickling through a creek, it's a place where you will find calm, they added. (Instagram)
