- Brea and Fullerton have an identity crisis, as cities across OC struggle with updating housing to meet numbers set by the state. Residents of Brea are concerned a proposed housing development will impact the community as City officials consider a proposal to replace a local closed movie theater with a highly visible eight-story apartment building that some residents say will worsen traffic and dramatically alter the small-town look of the community. Right next to Brea, Fullerton wants to make Cal State Fullerton into more of a college town, with the approval of a new five-story apartment building for student housing at the northeast corner of Chapman Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue. - Home camps may soon be disappearing all over Orange County. Ground was broken for the Salvation Army's Center of Hope in Anaheim on Monday. The new homeless community will feature a 325-bed emergency shelter with 72 permanent apartments. The Center will also have onsite medical assistance, dental services, pet care, and a 175-bed drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. Mayor Harry Sidhu, Susan Samueli, her daughter Erin Samueli and her husband Henry Samueli, whose foundation donated $1 million, and Congressman Lou Correa were at the groundbreaking ceremony. - Garden Grove is helping residents keep their city clean. The City is having a clean-up day on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 9 to 11 a.m., in partnership with Republic Services. Residents can properly dispose of bulky items for free, including appliances, furniture, mattresses, televisions, printers, and computers. This will be a self-service event in which residents will be unloading their own items. Hazardous waste and yard waste are not included. The drop-off location will be in the parking lot of the Garden Grove Main Library, located at 11200 Stanford Ave. and Garden Grove Public Works Department will be onsite to help elderly and disabled individuals who may need assistance.
