- Actress and singer Sally Kellerman died on Feb 24 at the age of 84. The Long Beach native was best known for her role as "Hot Lips" in Robert Altman's hit film "M*A*S*H." Kellerman earned an Oscar nomination for her role as Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the original film. She passed away in a nursing home in Woodland Hills after a battle with dementia, according to her son, Jack Krane. You can read more about this story here (with a subscription): (The Daily Breeze)
- The 5 Freeway north of Los Angeles was closed on Wednesday due to snow and wintry conditions. The National Weather Service advised some residents to take precautions like protecting tender plants and wrapping pipes and letting faucets drip to prevent pipes from freezing. Palm trees looked down on icy windshields in places like Murrieta on Thursday morning, and the National Weather Service reported temperatures at 6:30 a.m. were 0 degrees in Big Bear, 32 degrees in San Bernardino, and 37 degrees in Santa Ana. - Investigators looking into an oil spill in O.C. said it has been stalled for months. They are waiting for permission to remove a portion of the damaged San Pedro Bay pipeline off of Huntington Beach that spewed oil into the ocean and onto Orange County beaches in October. Investigators from the Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board are relying on video captured during underwater inspections of the pipeline but said that conducting a "detailed forensic examination" of the damage in a laboratory is needed.
