  1. If you love Limestone Canyon, you will be able to visit again soon. After two wildfires consumed thousands of acres of Limestone Canyon in 2020, the Irvine Ranch Conservancy and OC Parks closed the canyon to the public so the land could heal. Although the vegetation has not fully recovered to pre-fire levels, wildlife (including mule deer, coyotes, mountain lions, grey fox, bobcat, raccoons, and birds of prey) have returned. The canyon will reopen to visitors on Feb. 5. A Wilderness Access Day, which requires online registration, will give visitors use of trails inside the park. The conservancy is planning hiking, biking, and equestrian activities later this year, and the public can also take part in canyon restoration efforts. 2. Stay alert and drive safely. A female was struck and killed by a pickup truck when she was crossing the street Monday night in Huntington Beach, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department. Police officers were called to the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Yorktown Avenue around 6:20 p.m. A woman found in the road was pronounced dead at the scene, Huntington Beach police said. The 58-year-old man who drove the Chevrolet Silverado that struck the woman remained at the accident scene and cooperated with police officers, the Huntington Beach police said. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the department's traffic investigators at 714-536-5670. You can read more here: (Orange County Patch)
  3. A 7-year-old Laguna Niguel, CA, boy who is a cancer survivor yelled with surprise when a mini version of an electric U.S. Postal Service truck just his size was lowered from the back of a USPS truck in his neighborhood on Monday. Jacob Hayward, who is recovering from kidney and lung cancer, informed his USPS mail carrier about his love for the post office. Van Singletary, who has delivered mail to the 750-home community for 33 years, arranged to have Hayward visit the post office. Hayward was overjoyed to spend a morning at the post office, but officials were struck by what he had been through and surprised him with an electric mail truck, a postal cachet, and a uniform. “This is so awesome!” he said when he saw the special delivery. Hayward thanked them saying he would like to become a mail carrier one day and travel around the world. He practices in a post office tent set up in his room every day where he writes, sorts, and stuffs letters. You can read the full story here: (OC Register)
