Here are the top stories in Orange County today:

  1. Olivia Morales’s bike was stolen on Monday, April 11, while she was working at Subway in the John Wayne Airport. She had just purchased the bike a few days ago and it was her only way to get to and from work. When Airport Police Services personnel took the report, they wanted to do something to help Olivia, so they pitched in to buy her a replacement bike! Morales was very grateful and thanked Airport Police Services for their generosity and kindness. Way to go, Airport Police Services! (Facebook)
  2. Garden Grove and Huntington Beach are two of the 35 safest cities in the United States, according to a study by Smartasset.com. For every 100,000 residents, cities were evaluated on violent crime, property crime, death from car accidents, drug mortality, and what percentage of the people engaged in “excessive drinking.” Huntington Beach is tied for 26th place with Simi Valley and Garden Grove is 35th. Other Orange County cities ranked in the study are Irvine. which came in 18th, and Orange ranked 22nd. (Orange County Tribune)
  3. The popular Laguna Hills Mall, which was built in 1973, will be getting a long-awaited makeover. Laguna Hills City Council approved developer Merlone Geier Partner's new plans to transform the mall into a mixed-use development, "The Village at Laguna Hills." The Village will include offices, retail space, market rate and affordable housing apartments, a hotel and an outdoor park. Merlone Geier's said that redeveloping The Laguna Hills Mall is part of a larger trend of malls becoming mixed-use destinations. They plan to start construction in six to 12 months.
