Here are the top stories in Orange County today:

1. A man-made wave pool is part of a proposed plan that mixes surfing, an equestrian center, and a public pool on city-owned inland Northwest Open Space area. The proposed plan would transform San Juan Capistrano’s Northwest Open Space, a 65.5-acre, largely undeveloped property bought by the city in the 1990s with money raised by the sale of bonds approved by voters. The city recently accepted proposals for how the land could be used, but any potential use requires approvals by the city and the community review process. (OC Register)
2. A vehicle chase that started in OC ended near the border in Otay Mesa Saturday evening. Lt. Scott Roller of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department said the chase ended at about 7:40 p.m., with at least one occupant taken to a hospital with serious injuries. On Scene TV reported that Orange County deputies tried to stop a van with two occupants for reckless driving before it headed to San Diego County. On Scene said the van stopped near the border after leaving the roadway and hitting “several trees.” On Scene said two people were hospitalized. The chase caused a long freeway backup in the area. 3. Thirty parakeets found abandoned on a trail in Laguna Niguel were rescued on Tuesday, April 12. The colorful birds were captured in the brush by Mission Viejo Animal Services Center staff, who said they were out of their element and needed rescuing. The parakeets are now ready to find good homes and became available for adoption Sunday, April 17. (OC Register)
