Letter to the Editor: A Reminder to Slow Down For Garbage and Recycling Collectors

A Recology of the Coast worker lost both of his legs after a tragic accident in Pacifica last week.

Dear Editor,

I am writing in regards to the story “Major Injury Accident in Pacifica Puts Garbage Truck Worker in the Hospital,” which describes the tragic and horrific accident that occurred on Friday, Nov. 8 on Catalina Avenue in Pacifica.

What this story fails to mention is that his injuries were so extensive, he had both of his legs amputated. This is a hard-working man who has worked for (what is now) Recology of the Coast for 24 years, despite being only 43 years old.

Those who witnessed the accident (or heard his screams echo through their homes) immediately jumped to his aid. One neighborhood man held his head and phoned the man’s father while they waited for emergency assistance. While this demonstrates the humanity of our fellow Pacificans, there are others who may need to be reminded that their actions can have drastic repercussions, altering the course of a person’s life within seconds.

My friend and neighbor is a friend and coworker of the man who was injured in that accident. He asked me to send this letter to remind us all to please slow down and pay attention when you are driving around town. Garbage and recycling collectors are on the streets doing their job. Please be respectful of their safety and reduce your speed when you see a stopped Recology truck or a bright yellow vest. Just like you and me, these folks are trying to make a living.

Thanks for your attention.
