Officers Shoot SMC Man Wielding Knife Sending Him To Hospital In Critical Condition: Police

Police said the man was reportedly on drugs and making suicidal statements.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Officers shot a man Monday morning in South San Francisco who was reportedly under the influence of drugs and brandished a knife at officers, police said.

At around 5:10 a.m. on Monday, the South San Francisco Police Department received 911 calls about man under the influence of drugs that had armed himself with a knife and was making suicidal statements.

Officers said they arrived and were speaking with the person who called 911 when the man, who is in his 20s, exited the home.

Police said they tried to deescalate the situation and that the man initially complied.

But as he approached officers, he pulled out a knife, police said.

Officers said they deployed a taser and ordered him to drop the knife. Police said the taser was ineffective and the man ignored further commands to drop the knife.

Officers said the man then charged at officers with the knife raised and two officers fired their guns, striking the man.

The man was transported to a local trauma center where he remains in critical condition, police said.

No police were injured.

Police have not released the identity of the man at this time.

The South San Francisco Police Detective Bureau, and the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office is conducting an officer-involved shooting investigation.
