San Mateo County Town Still Accepting Submissions For Climate Change Youth Art Competition

The Pacifica Youth Art Competition extended the deadline for entries into the climate change-themed contest.

PACIFICA, CA — The City of Pacifica’s climate task force held a youth art competition April 12 at the community center but has announced it will extend the deadline until 5 p.m. Friday for those still wanting to participate.

The Climate Action and Adaption Plan Task Force hosted the contest with the theme and prompt for the art being, “How can YOU make a difference for climate change in Pacifica?” or “If your favorite things about Pacifica (beach, riding bikes, being outside with the trees, feeling the cold fog on your skin) were to disappear because of our rapidly changing climate, how would you feel?

The event was free for kindergarten through eighth grade. Art supplies were provided but the CAAP also encouraged students to bring in any supplies they wanted, especially reusable items from home.

Those who missed the April 12 event can still submit art. Completed artwork can be dropped off by 5 p.m. Thursday or Friday at the Community Center at 540 Crespi Dr., or they can email a high-quality photo of the artwork to Brittany Hernandez, The City of Pacifica program manager, at bhernandez@pacifica.org. Make sure to clearly label the back of the artwork with the child’s name, age, and grade.

Some of the artwork submitted on Saturday included several drawings of the children but their bodies were the earth. Some drew their favorite beaches or other spots in nature.

One submission will be chosen as the CAAP cover art. There will be a community vote 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 26 at the Pelican Festival on Linda Mar State Beach, which is hosted by the Pacifica Beach Coalition.
