SMC Libraries Launch Free Diaper Program

San Mateo County families will have several chances through the holiday season and into the new year to pick up free diapers at libraries.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Peninsula families in need will have opportunities over the next several weeks to pick up free diapers at two San Mateo County Libraries branches as part of a new program.

The library system launched the three-month pilot program late last month, which has already provided nearly 10,000 free diapers to community members, officials said Thursday. The Measure K-funded effort is designed to ease the financial burden of the rising cost of diapers and other essentials. Officials cited data showing low-income families spend an estimated 14 percent of their post-tax income on diapers.

"Free diapers and wipes can make a big difference for families struggling with the high cost of living in the Bay Area, especially during the holiday season," said Sara McDowell, chair of the governing board. "San Mateo County Libraries are a trusted resource in our communities, and we are honored to be the ones providing these essential items in a welcoming environment for families and their little ones."

Nearly a dozen diaper giveaways are on the calendar through January at the Belmont and Pacifica Sharp Park branches, including two on Saturday. Diapers are available in sizes 1-6 on a first come, first serve basis, with no library card, identification, or proof of income required.

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in October approved $50,000 in Measure K funds to support the program, building on earlier successes facilitated by the library, including free COVID-19 masks and test kits.

"In these tough economic times, we wanted to make certain people weren't choosing between nutritious food and essentials like diapers, for their children," said District 3 Supervisor Ray Mueller. "We've seen this work at other libraries in California and wanted to make it happen for our residents here in San Mateo County. Hopefully, this makes the holiday season a little brighter for those in need."
