In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Riley recalled growing up in the Palisades and going to the 1999 Women's World Cup at the Rose Bowl, dreaming that someday she'd play in the tournament.
After graduating from Harvard-Westlake School and Stanford University, she planned to play with the LA Sol. But that team folded and left her with a 13-year gap before she could return to her hometown to play soccer.
