Alleged Stolen Diamond Ring Recovered in Palm Desert

The Sheriff's Department has recovered a diamond ring said to be worth $22,500 that was allegedly stolen from an El Paseo jeweler by Doris Marie Payne on Oct. 21, Palm Desert deputies said Thursday.

Payne, who recounted her life as a jewel thief in a recent documentary, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to stealing the ring.

Here's the Nov. 7 statement from Palm Desert deputies Donald Isaacs and Adan Yamaguchi:

On Wednesday, November 6, 2013, officers from the Palm Desert Police Department's Business District Team authored a search warrant for a Palm Desert secondhand jewelry dealer. The warrant was for a diamond ring, and other evidence involving a theft from an El Paseo Jeweler on October 21, 2013.

The ring was recovered, and will be held in evidence, pursuant to court order or adjudication of the criminal case. The suspect in the case was Doris Payne, age 83 of Riverside.

Anyone with further information about this incident is urged to contact case agent, Officer Adan Yamaguchi of the Palm Desert Police Business District Team at (760) 836-1600.

Payne remained locked up Thursday at Smith Correctional in Banning, according to inmate records.
