Big Rig Crashes into Palm Tree, Driver Deceased at Scene

A big rig crashed into a palm tree Monday morning in Coachella and the driver was declared deceased at the scene, a sheriff's sergeant said.

Coachella police responded at 5:51 a.m. Nov. 18 to Grapefruit Boulevard and Harrison Street, Sgt. Adam Elders of the Thermal Station said in a statement.

"Officers arrived on scene and located the semi-truck off the east side of the roadway, over the railroad tracks," Elders said. "The driver, a 62 year old male from San Bernardino County was unresponsive. Cal Fire personal arrived and determined the driver was deceased."

The investigation into the cause of the collision was continuing, Elders said. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor.
