Palm Springs Visitor Struck, Killed In Weekend Crash

The fatal crash was reported at the intersection of N. Palm Canyon Drive and N. Via Las Palmas.

PALM SPRINGS, CA — A pedestrian killed over the weekend in a Palm Springs crash was identified by the coroner as an out-of-state resident.

Craig Von Bargen, 74, of Peconic, New York, died at the crash scene shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner's Bureau.

Palm Springs police reported that they were summoned that night to the intersection of N. Palm Canyon Drive and N. Via Las Palmas regarding the crash.

Von Bargen was hit by a vehicle while he was in the crosswalk, but according to police the crosswalk lighting system "was not used at the time of the incident."

The lighting system is intended to alert drivers of pedestrians.

Von Bargen was visiting the area, police said.

"Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this collision," according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

No arrests were announced.
