PALM DESERT, CA — The Coachella Valley Water District and a contractor began construction Monday on a non-potable water pipeline at Fred Waring Drive and Warner Trail in Palm Desert.

The project is intended to allow the water system to "maximize the use of recycled water instead of pumping groundwater for irrigation on the Tennis Gardens outdoor landscaping," according to a district statement, in addition to other long-term water management objectives.

San Bernardino-based WEKA Inc. is assisting with the installation.

Construction efforts will close Warner Trail's southbound lanes south of Fred Waring Drive between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., officials said. The district estimated that the project would be complete on Jan. 3.

The CVWD provides domestic water, agricultural irrigation and drainage to approximately 114,000 customers, primarily residents and businesses in Riverside County, in addition to parts of Imperial and San Diego counties.
