33 Cited for Unsafe Driving on Popular 'Switchbacks' in Rancho Palos Verdes

Authorities have stepped up enforcement in the area after complaints from residents about noise and unsafe driving.

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — Thirty-three people have been cited on a stretch of road popular with motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts known as "The Switchbacks" in Rancho Palos Verdes, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The popularity of the stretch on Palos Verdes Drive East between Crest Road and Palos Verdes Drive has drawn complaints of speeding, reckless driving and unsafe passing from residents.

"The noise generated by illegally-modified motorcycle exhaust systems is a major quality of life concern and infringes on the peace and tranquility of nearby residential neighborhoods," sheriff's Capt. Dan Beringer said.

In May, the sheriff's department started a "zero tolerance" policy for would-be scofflaws. Deputies from the Lomita Station have issued a total of 33 citations, the majority of which were written to motorcyclists for a variety of violations including loud exhaust, no license plates, speeding, and crossing the double yellow lines.

Deputies also arrested two people and impounded a motorcycle and a passenger car.

"Our goal is to protect all users of the roadway and to preserve peace in the area," Beringer said. "We also ask all motorists to be mindful of safety on this narrow stretch of road, which is also heavily traveled by bicyclists and pedestrians."

Deputies will continue their increased traffic enforcement on that stretch of road, he said.
