Archangels Move Toward Championship

Wins in the past days have the St. John Fisher team headed for a tough game next weekend with eyes on the CYO Championship.

St. John Fisher Boy's Basketball Coach Tom Scott writes about his team's winning season:

The St. John Fisher A Team began its journey toward the CYO Championship with a first-round game against a very strong and quick team out of Downey, Our Lady of Perpetual Hope, last week.

The St. John Fisher Archangels came out firing on all cylinders and pulled away for a 36-14 half-time lead. The second half began and the Archangels used a smothering defense to go up by 31 points with 12:36 seconds remaining in the second half.

The game was called at the 10:00 minute mark because of a tremendous point difference. St. John Fisher scored the victory with a final mark of 49-19.

On Sunday, the Archangels were paired with a very strong team from Compton in St. Albert the Great. The game was close throughout and the physical style of play resulted in numerous fouls called on both sides.

In the second half with approximately four minutes remaining in the game, St. John Fisher held a slim lead of 29-28 after a furious run by St. Albert's to close an eight-point deficit.

The Archangels responded with a three-point play by Jason Burr and another three-point play by Nick Giordano to give the Archangels some breathing room. With the deficit to seven points, St. Albert's was forced to commit fouls in an effort to get the ball back and the Archangels made their foul shots and escaped with a 40-30 victory.

With this victory St. John Fisher moves to the Sweet 16 round (only 16 teams remain in the tournament) with a very formidable task in front of the team next Sunday.

The Archangels face defending CYO Champions, St. Jane Frances, at St. Monica's High School at 1 p.m. March 6. St. Jane Frances is a strong team that will present St. John Fisher with a huge challenge. Best of luck to the Archangels as they continue on their journey to the CYO Championship.
