Big Rig With Lithium-Ion Batteries Inside Catches Fire Near Port Of LA

Lithium-ion batteries inside an overturned tractor-trailer burst into flames on the 47 Freeway Thursday afternoon.

SAN PEDRO, CA — Firefighters are on the scene of an overturned tractor-trailer filled with lithium-ion batteries that burst into flames on the 47 Freeway Thursday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Firefighters originally responded to the crash at about 11:58 a.m. and began setting up hose lines in case of fire hazard. LAFD Hazardous Materials specialists on-site also set up decontamination stations in case of hazardous materials exposure.

At about 2 p.m., firefighters reported that the lithium-ion batteries in the trailer were damaged and were on fire and off-gassing. One battery is believed to have exploded, officials said.

"LAFD Hazardous Materials specialists are on scene. Firefighters have created a large perimeter around the site and are in the defensive mode, keeping their distance with hose lines for protection," LAFD spokesperson Nicholas Prange said.

At this time, there are no evacuations issued and no widespread or off-site hazard, LAFD said. The 47 Freeway is completely shut down in both directions between the southbound 710 Freeway and the Vincent Thomas Bridge near the Port of Los Angeles.
