Drive Safely in Wet Weather

Wednesday's created hazardous driving conditions for motorists throughout the South Bay.

According to a news release from the Automobile Club of Southern California, motorists should slow down and keep their distance from the car in front of them.

"Slippery roads and cold weather spell increased crash risk," said Steve Mazor, manager of the Auto Club's Automotive Research Center. "As best they can, drivers should also scan the roadways and stay away and look out for disabled vehicles in reduced visibility conditions.

"The Auto Club also recommends that motorists turn on their vehicle's headlights so they can see and be seen by other drivers."

Besides slowing down and keeping a distance between cars, the Auto Club advises motorists to do the following:

• Avoid skids. Drivers should avoid sudden braking, especially when they're skidding, according to the Auto Club. Instead, they should apply steady pressure to the brakes and steer in the direction the car is sliding.

• Drive in the center lanes. Water from heavy rains collects near the curb.

• Avoid distractions. Don't text, talk on the phone or apply makeup while driving, especially when it's wet outside.

• Keep an eye on traffic and the weather. Avoid highly congested areas.

• Watch out for potholes, and don't brake direction over one. Puddles in the road can hide deep potholes.

The Auto Club also advised motorists to check their tires, wiper blades and brakes, as well as use their headlights and windshield defroster while driving.
