Gas, Electricity Shutoffs Expand To Rolling Hills Due To Land Movement

Natural gas service for 34 homes in Rolling Hills will be discontinued on Monday and 51 residents could also lose electricity.

ROLLING HILLS, CA — SoCalGas shutoffs have expanded to the City of Rolling Hills due to ongoing land movement and the threat of additional power shutoffs looms over the community.

On Thursday, SoCalGas informed Rolling Hills officials that 35 homes in the city will have their natural gas services discontinued. Additionally, Southern California Edison notified 51 households that electricity may be cut due to related land movement complications.

movement affecting the circuit that serves your neighborhood has created unsafe and hazardous
conditions, which have already impacted SCE’s infrastructure, causing power poles to lean and
power lines to fail," SCE wrote in a notice to customers.

Utility shutoffs began in Rancho Palos Verdes in July when 135 initial homes lost gas service in the Portuguese Bend area. Since then, more and more homes near the landslide area have lost both gas and electricity as the situation worsens every day.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Rancho Palos Verdes on Sept. 3 due to the impacts of accelerated land movement on the provision of basic utility services

The ongoing landslides have also impacted the city's sewage system, causing a 10,000-gallon sewage spill along a coastal roadway on Aug. 24.
