Letter to the Editor: Board Should 'Bridge Gap' Between Stadium Lights Groups

The PVPUSD Board should do more to bring those for and against stadium lights at Peninsula High together, residents write in a Letter to the Editor.

[Earlier this month] we attended the PVPUSD Board meeting in regards to the football stadium lights at .

The board said resolution of the stadium lights issue needs to "come out of a collaboration of supporters and critics." My wife and I agree! But we, as pro-lights supporters along with other families at the meeting, hold the board responsible for the lack of collaboration. How unfair for the board to cite "lack of collaboration" as a reason for not moving forward when they missed the opportunity to provide leadership and help assist reaching compromise.

This, along with the board's unwillingness to address anti-light concerns they could have refuted (i.e. new light technologies cover only the field as the board verified during field inspections, etc.), seems to us a big part of the problem.

The board still has a chance to correct this issue which we are sure is not going away. We believe the board should provide the leadership for which we elected them and take steps to bridge the gap between the two sides by working out a reasonable and fair compromise.

Saying things like, "I'm really very sad we won't have lights,” as board member Barbara Lucky did, isn't leadership. Finding a way to bring opposing viewpoints together in a rational way is.

Let's hold the board to their roles as leaders of the community and challenge them to resolve this issue now. If they truly want what is best for the kids and the community, they will not push this issue under the rug and allow it to fester, but rather help pull together solutions.
