National Science Challenge Winner to Show Work at Local School

Peninsula High student Braeden Benedict will talk about his winning work at an upcoming school assembly.

A student recently named "America's Top Young Scientist" in a national science challenge will show off his winning work at an upcoming assembly at later this month.

Braeden Benedict, of Rancho Palos Verdes, the 2011 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. He was also recently honored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for his work on a low-cost detection device to help spot concussions in athletes.

The Nov. 30 assembly will feature science demonstrations from the competition's head judge and a presentation by Benedict. It will be held from 8:15-9:45 a.m. at St. John Fisher School, 5448 Crest Road in Rancho Palos Verdes.

in July, Benedict competed against nine others in early October during a live competition at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, MN.

He won $25,000 and a trip from Discovery Student Adventures for his innovation in developing a low-cost impact detection device that can make it easier to spot concussions in athletes.
