New Names for Coastal Areas on RPV Council Agenda

Council will consider a policy for the public display of banners in the city, in addition to renaming area waterfronts.

A policy for hanging noncommercial event banners within the city's street rights-of-way, in addition to new names for local waterfronts will be discussed by the Tuesday night.

Council will consider changing the name of the Point Vicente Fishing Access to Pelican Cove and selecting the name Sea Star Beach for the small beach located below Founders Park, or Trump Beach.

New state regulations scheduled to go into effect at the start of next year will prohibit both on-shore and off-shore fishing in the cove, which led to the name-change discussions for Point Vicente Fishing Access.

Staff recommended the Pelican Cove name "for the squadrons of California Brown Pelicans that can frequently be seen flying past the cove and represented in the bronze sculpture located near the parking lot," according to a staff report. Two alternatives are Lighthouse Cove and Toveemor Cove.

The selection of Sea Star Beach was chosen by city staff "for the brightly colored invertebrates found in the rocky pools at this beach that can be seen at low tide," according to a staff report. Two alternative names are Sunset Beach and Founders Beach.
