Poll: Should Voting be Mandatory?
Laws in 31 countries require citizens to participate in elections, according to a New York Times opinion piece. Palos Verdes residents will cast their votes Tuesday.

While many Palos Verdes residents will head to the polls Tuesday , others will choose not to cast ballots in local races.
However, some residents in countries across the globe are required to participate in elections, according to an article in Sunday's New York Times by William A. Galston, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
Thirty-one countries have some form of mandatory voting, according to the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, Galston wrote.

"Our low turnout rate pushes American politics toward increased polarization," he wrote in the article.
