RPV Pony Club Seeks Permit Extension to Keep Horses

The Rancho Palos Verdes Council will consider extending a permit that sets a limit on the number of horses allowed at the Portuguese Bend Pony Club.

members tonight will weigh a request from the Portuguese Bend Pony Club to extend a permit that allows the club to keep up to 17 horses on its property for riding lessons and other programs.

The city has granted the club's requests for extensions to its conditional large domestic animal permit since 2003. Tonight's extension request would allow the club to keep the horses at 2 West Pomegranate through 2016.

Fifteen horses are currently kept in a 13.78-acre parcel on the southwest corner of Pomegranate Road and Peppertree Drive in the Portuguese Bend community.

Also on the agenda is the appointment of three members to the Abalone Cove Landslide Abatement District Board. The district is responsible for abatement efforts to prevent movement of the Abalone Cove landslide.

The three incumbent candidates are Jim Knight, Bud Parks and Ron Dragoo. Because of Knight's , the city will wait to receive an update on election results, which are expected this afternoon. In the case that Knight receives the majority of votes needed for a spot on city council, he will not be able to serve on the board, according to a city report. The city would then choose another resident to act as a member.

The majority of remaining outstanding ballots are expected to be counted by today, with a statement of final results by Nov. 21.

The three appointed members would each serve four-year terms on the board.
