Rancho Palos Verdes To Unveil Tongva Monument

The city of Rancho Palos Verdes will unveil a stone Tongva monument Saturday.

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — The city of Rancho Palos Verdes will unveil a stone monument honoring the Indigenous people of Los Angeles with an event at Abalone Cove Park on Saturday, officials said.

The monument is designed in collaboration with the Gabrieleño/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians, according to the city.

The stone monument displays interpretive bronze bas relief plaques sculpted by artist Geri Jimenez Gould, including a Tongva village scene with Catalina Island in the background.

Locals are invited to the unveiling ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at Abalone Cove Park, 5970 Palos Verdes Drive South.

Parking will be free for attendees until noon.

Several people are expected to speak at the event, including Rancho Palos Verdes Mayor Eric Algeria, Gabrieleño/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians Chief Anthony Morales, Rancho Palos Verdes resident Tom Steers, who organized the project, and Ms. Gould.
