RPV Artist Donates Monet Replica to Marymount

A local artist donates a piece from his series of 30 Claude Monet copies to Marymount College.

After spending years creating replicas of some of Claude Monet's most famous paintings, Rancho Palos Verdes artist Laszlo Gyermek has donated one of his 30 pieces to .

Gyermek worked on hundreds of oil painting replicas during the last four decades with a focus on Impressionist art. Last January, of Monet's Cathedral at Rouen series after studying the work in art museums around the world. Now, one will be displayed at Marymount College’s Waterfront Campus, 222 West Sixth St., San Pedro.

“The college is honored to be the beneficiary of such a beautiful painting,” said Michael Brophy, president of Marymount College, in a statement. "Dr. Gyermek’s collection of Monet cathedrals reflects his enthusiasm and admiration of the original work by Monet.”

Gyermek began his work on the Rouen series in 1978 and spent nearly 2,000 hours on the paintings, finishing just before his show in January 2011.

"The only pressure is, I wanted to be as good as possible, as close to a masterpiece as possible," of his Rouen series re-creations in a previous interview.
