Set Clocks Back Before Bed Saturday

Pick up an extra hour of sleep when daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday.

Palos Verdes residents can plan their weekends around an extra hour of sleep as the Peninsula and most of the U.S. say goodbye to daylight saving time early Sunday.

Daylight time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday. Set all analog clocks back an hour before heading off to bed.

This is also a good time to replace the batteries in smoke detectors, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The replacement of batteries twice a year is recommended to ensure that smoke detectors work properly.

Here are some facts about daylight time from The California Energy Commission:

  • Benjamin Franklin first suggested the idea in an essay titled "An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light," first published in April 1784. In 1907, William Willett suggested it again.
  • From 1945-66, there was no U.S. law about daylight saving time. States and localities were free to observe it or not.
  • Many countries observe daylight saving time. But the beginning and ending dates are often different than those used in the United States.
  • Most bars won't be open for the extra hour. The bars don't close at 2 a.m. but actually at 1:59 a.m. They are already closed when the time changes from daylight saving time to Standard Time.
