City And School Leaders Urge PUSD To Mandate Vaccines: Report

PASADENA, CA — With the new school year set to begin Thursday, city and school leaders in Pasadena are urging district officials to implement a COVID-19 vaccine mandate before campuses reopen.

Mayor Victor Gordo and Pasadena Unified School District board member Tina Fredericks held a press conference Tuesday to make one last push for a vaccine mandate, according to the Pasadena Star-News.

The district decided not to implement a mandate during its Aug. 5 board meeting. Instead, school officials deferred taking any possible action until its next meeting on Aug. 26, the paper reported.

While the district has a 96 percent vaccination rate among its employees, Fredericks said it's irrelevant when there are more than 2,000 elementary school students who are too young to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Their health is at risk just by the four percent of people in the district who remain unvaccinated, she said, according to the Star-News.
