UPDATE: AT&T Apologizes For Outage
AT&T advised the Petaluma Police Department about a 911 outage.
PETALUMA, CA — An outage that was preventing some AT&T subscribers from calling 911 was resolved, Petaluma police said in an update at 4:30 p.m. Thursday
AT&T advised the Petaluma Police Department about the outage early Thursday morning.
Around 3 a.m., police alerted the public and instructed anyone in Petaluma who had a legitimate emergency but could not get through to 911 to call the Police Department's non-emergency line at 707-778-4326.

AT&T announced just after noon Thursday that service was restored, but was slim on explanations for the problem that reached its peak in the morning.
Petaluma was not the only community that reported trouble with calling 911 on their AT&T mobile networks. The website Downdetector, which tracks tech-related outages, showed over 74,000 people reported problems with their AT&T mobile network Thursday.

Callers were advised to use Wi-Fi calling or try alternate numbers for first responders in case of emergency.
Downdetector uses self-reported information so is merely a snapshot of an outage problem.
