Authorities Identify 1-Year-Old Boy Killed In Suspected DUI Crash

He and his big sister, 4, were riding as passengers when the crash happened on Highway 1 in the Sea Ranch area of coastal Sonoma County.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A child who died in a suspected DUI crash over the weekend was identified by the Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner's Office as 1 1/2-year-old John Marrufo, from Annapolis.

Colton Nathaniel Marrufo, 19, of Annapolis, is facing 14 charges in connection with the crash that happened Saturday on Highway 1 near Leeward Spur in the Sea Ranch area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 1 1/2-year-old boy and his 4-year-old sister were passengers in a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Colton. Around 10:25 p.m. Saturday, he lost control of the truck and it veered to the right and went up a dirt embankment, then rolled back onto the roadway, the CHP said.

The crash fatally injured John. While they shared the same last name it was not clear if John was Colton's infant son.

John's big sister was unscathed in the crash.

Officers determined Colton was under the influence of alcohol, the CHP said. After he was treated for injuries at a hospital, Colton was booked into Sonoma County jail on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, gross vehicular manslaughter while DUI, child endangerment, and having an unsecured firearm in the car.

As of Wednesday, Colton remained in custody. His bail was set at $500,000 and he was facing some 14 charges related to the fatal crash, jail records showed.

On a GoFundMe set up by John's mother, Rosalee Davis, for funeral expenses, she wrote that her son was the "happiest baby on earth and the funniest lil' man ever."

He enjoyed everything but tomatoes, she wrote. He loved his Halloween costume, "Boo," and hugged it as tight as he could with joy."

She would never have the chance to see him wear the costume Halloween night for trick-or-treating.

Instead, she is planning for his funeral and raised over $2,500 by Wednesday night toward her goal of $5,000.
