Bay Area Rain is Moving Out, But Black Ice Could Move In

BREAKING: Temperatures are predicted to drop as low as 28 degrees in some areas of the North Bay valleys.

BAY AREA, CA -- With the rain expected to take a break this weekend, drivers in the Bay Area can expect a new weather hazard on the roadways: black ice, according to the National Weather Service.

Black ice isn't truly black, but is a coat of ice that's clear enough for the black road beneath it to be clearly visible. Black ice can cause increased skidding and loss of traction.

NWS meteorologist Charles Bell said with temperatures plunging to subfreezing in some parts of the region tonight, black ice could coat the roadways. Temperatures are predicted to drop as low as 28 degrees in some areas of the North Bay valleys, Bell said.

Though concern for black ice is high, the dry weather will also give an opportunity for swollen rivers and streams to recede substantially, according to the NWS.

Many areas across the region maintain active flood warnings and advisories on Jan. 12, and wet weather could return to the Bay Area by the night of Tuesday, Jan. 17, Bell said.
