Coroner Identifies Man, 84, Fatally Struck While Checking Mail

The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner's Office identified a man struck and killed in unincorporated Petaluma.

PETALUMA, CA — The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner's Office identified an elderly Petaluma resident struck and killed Monday night while checking his mailbox.

Roger McMillan, 84, of Petaluma, was struck around 8:20 p.m. Monday on Skillman Lane near Thompson Road, about 1 mile west of Petaluma city limits, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol responded along with emergency medical personnel.

CHP's preliminary investigation indicated McMillan crossed Skillman Lane on foot to check the mailbox. A Land Rover was traveling westbound on Skillman Lane and collided with him, CHP Officer David deRutte said.

The driver of the Land Rover was traveling within the speed limit and there were no signs the driver was impaired, deRutte said.
