Elderly Man Hit, Killed While Checking Mail: CHP

A Land Rover fatally struck the man on a rural road west of Petaluma city limits.

PETALUMA, CA — An elderly man was struck and killed by a car Monday night while crossing the street to check his mail on a rural road about 1 mile west of Petaluma city limits.

Santa Rosa California Highway Patrol officers responded around 8:20 p.m. to reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Skillman Lane east of Thompson Road, CHP Officer David deRutte said.

"Preliminary investigation indicates an elderly male crossed Skillman Lane on foot to check the mailbox," deRutte said. "A Land Rover was traveling westbound on Skillman Lane within the speed limit and collided with the pedestrian."

The CHP said there were no signs the Land Rover driver was impaired.

The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner's Office was expected to identify the man once his next of kin were properly notified.

The CHP asked anyone with information regarding the crash to call the Santa Rosa CHP Office at 707-806-5600.
