Infant Killed In Suspected DUI Crash In Sonoma County

A 19-year-old driver was arrested in the crash that also injured a 4-year-old child, the CHP said.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A 1-year-old child died in a suspected DUI crash Saturday night in coastal Sonoma County.

The California Highway Patrol responded at 10:25 p.m. Saturday to a crash on Highway 1 north of Leeward Spur in the Sea Ranch area to find that the driver of a Ford F-150 pickup truck had veered off the right side of the roadway and drove up an ascending dirt embankment, then rolled over back onto the roadway.

As a result, the infant was fatally injured and a 4-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries, the CHP said.

Officers determined the 19-year-old male driver was under the influence of alcohol, the CHP said.

After he was treated for injuries at a hospital, the driver was booked into Sonoma County jail on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, gross vehicular manslaughter while DUI, child endangerment, and having an unsecured firearm in the car.

The CHP did not disclose the driver's name or describe the relationship between the driver and the two children.

The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner's Office may release the child's identity once family members are properly notified.

Authorities asked anyone with information about the crash to call the Santa Rosa Area CHP office in Rohnert Park at 707-588-1400.
