Petaluma Burglar Caught: He Forgot His Wallet

28-year-old Erin Costigan was seen running early Tuesday near a burgled clothing store on Kentucky Street. He'd forgotten his wallet and ID.

PETALUMA - A man was arrested early Tuesday morning immediately after he allegedly broke into a business and stole clothing, police said.

At 12:03 a.m., officers responded to a report of a smashed window at a business in the 100 block of Kentucky Street. While checking the area, an officer observed the suspect, 28-year-old Erin Costigan of Santa Rosa, running from the back alley of the business, police said.

After a short foot pursuit, the officer detained Costigan on Water Street.

Costigan had cuts to his arms and was bleeding, while also showing signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance, according to police.

Police said Costigan appeared to be in possession of clothing from the business, and upon further investigation they found the suspect’s clothing and wallet with ID inside the store.

Costigan was transferred to a hospital for his injuries before being arrested on suspicion of burglary, being under the influence of a controlled substance and obstructing a peace officer.

Costigan was booked into Sonoma County Jail and is being held on $10,000 bail.
