UPDATE: 11:40 a.m. 4/21/17

PETALUMA, CA -- During the evening of April 19 Petaluma Police emergency dispatchers say they began to receive numerous telephone reports of an alleged threat to the Casa Grande campus. In all, 15 different reports came in from concerned parents, students, and citizens, authorities say.

Police officers say they worked throughout the night in cooperation with Petaluma City Schools to identify the source of the social media threat and that officers made two homes visits to teens suspected of sending the message.

Then, following up on another lead, officers began working to identify the author of the message. Prior to the start of the scheduled school day, officers say they were in contact with the student and that they ultimately contacted a juvenile at his residence and the PPD's Investigations Unit responded to interview the teen.

"It was quickly determined that we were interviewing the person responsible for the social media posting which referenced school violence," Petaluma police said in a statement. "The juvenile and his parents were cooperative with the investigation."

Based on the investigation, police said they determined that there was no credible threat to the Casa Grande campus, however due to the nature of the social media post, the juvenile was arrested while at his house.

Authorities say no firearms located during the initial contact, nor the subsequent search of his residence, but that the Petaluma PD Investigations Unit will continue the investigation "to completely and thoroughly review and examine all the evidence" in the case.

"We understand the concern and the desire to get as much information as possible, but we would like to remind people that the information received through social media, such as Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, etc, is seldom accurate or complete," the PPD said in its statement. "We urge restraint when basing opinions or acting upon information obtained in this manner."

Any additional witnesses or anybody with a saved image of the original threat are being asked to contact the Petaluma Police Investigations Unit at (707) 778-4415.
