Racers Sickened After 'Tough Mudder' At Sonoma Raceway
A health advisory was issued this week after reports of rashes and other ailments affecting participants in the popular endurance race.
SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Sonoma County health officials have issued a health advisory for participants of a weekend Tough Mudder event after several racers developed rashes, fevers, muscle pains, nausea, or vomiting in the hours after it concluded.
The Department of Health Services urges anyone who participated in the race on Aug. 19 or Aug. 20 to see their medical provider or seek treatment at an emergency department. While the illness could be something mild, the symptoms could also match with more serious bacterial infections like Staph or Aeromonas, officials warned.
The health advisory reads:

“The Tough Mudder race involved extensive skin exposure to mud. Most affected persons have pustular rash, fever, myalgias, and headache. These symptoms could be indicative of a minor illness called Swimmers’ Itch, but they can also indicate a Staph infection or other more serious bacterial infection such as Aeromonas. If you participated in the race and have a rash with fever or other symptoms, please see your medical provider or, if you do not have a medical provider, your local emergency department. You may wish to take this Advisory with you. Incubation period is 12 to 48 hours.”
