Repeat DUI Offender Held On $700K Bail: Police
Police said the man provided a false name to the officer but the officer knew it was fake because he'd previously arrested the man for DUI.
PETALUMA, CA — A repeat DUI offender was no longer driving the streets following his arrest Friday in Petaluma, police said.
Miguel Angel Fernandez-Hernandez, 50, of Petaluma, was stopped shortly before 8 p.m. Friday when an officer saw him speeding and making unsafe and abrupt lane changes in congested traffic, Petaluma police Lt. Matthew Parnow said.
It is also alleged that when stopped, Fernandez-Hernandez provided a false name to the officer.
The officer was aware Fernandez-Hernandez gave a false name because the same officer had arrested Fernandez-Hernandez twice before for DUI and recognized him, Parnow said.
Fernandez-Hernandez, who is serving probation for two DUI counts, showed signs of alcohol intoxication and displayed impairment on field sobriety tests, police said.
Fernandez-Hernandez was arrested on suspicion of DUI with a felony enhancement for multiple prior DUI convictions; violation of probation; falsely identifying to a police officer; and driving on a suspended license.
A bail enhancement was sought because of the risks posed to the community by Fernandez-Hernandez continuing his behavior, Parnow said.
Fernandez-Hernandez was booked into Sonoma County jail and his bail was set at $700,000. He is due in court Tuesday morning.
