Suspected DUI Driver Hits Fire Hydrant

Officers caught up with the driver and arrested him on suspicion of hit-and-run and other charges.

PETALUMA, CA — A suspected DUI driver hit a fire hydrant early Sunday in Petaluma, police said.

Officers were dispatched shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday to the 200 block of North Water Street where the driver of a gray Dodge Challenger reportedly left the scene after colliding with a hydrant, Petaluma police Lt. Garrett Glaviano said.

Officers witnessed water spraying into the air from the broken hydrant.

A Dodge Challenger with damage consistent with the wreck was found parked down the road.

"The driver reportedly fled the area on foot and a description was obtained," Glaviano said.

Officers found a person matching the description of the driver walking in the 800 block of Petaluma Blvd North.

The driver was identified as Kelvin Kelsey.

"Kelsey had objective signs of alcohol intoxication and showed impairment while performing field sobriety tests," Glaviano said.

The investigating officer determined Kelsey was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision and placed him under arrest, Glaviano said.

Kelsey was additionally charged on suspicion of hit-and-run and was booked into the Sonoma County jail.
