Work Underway On New Docks At Petaluma Turning Basin
The aging docks within the Turning Basin on the Petaluma River were removed in 2022 during dredging.

PETALUMA, CA — The D Street drawbridge was opened for a time Wednesday morning to make way for Turning Basin dock replacement construction equipment, signaling that the final phase of a three-phase project is underway.
The aging docks located within the Turning Basin on the Petaluma River — between the back of the River Plaza shopping center and Weller Street — were removed in 2022 to allow for dredging. This work was necessary and gave the city an opportunity to replace the docks with new ones.
Construction began in October and is expected to be completed in early 2024. According to the city, the new docks will have several perks, including:

—Increased safety via a new fire suppression system.
During construction, which is expected to continue through January, Petalumans should be aware of periodic traffic delays when the D Street drawbridge is lifted as construction equipment is brought in on barges.
The city also said noise and vibration may be experienced in the area in mid- to late-November as dock piles — large posts/poles driven into the ground to stabilize the docks — are installed.
Further, city officials said the Turning Basin is closed to recreational boaters for safety reasons during construction. Bridge opening requests may not be possible during certain construction activities, the city said.
