New Express Lane Entrances to Open on I-15
Drivers will have more opportunities to enter and exit the express lanes.

1. Additional express lane entrances and exits will open this week on Interstate 15, according to Caltrans. A southbound entrance and exit just south of Poway Road/Rancho Peñasquitos Boulevard and a northbound entrance north of Mira Mesa Boulevard will both be available for motorists. Drivers who enter I-15 from Carmel Mountain Road, Camino del Norte, Bernardo Center Drive and farther north can access the entrance, while motorists can exit there to access Mira Mesa Boulevard and destinations farther south.
2. Events in the fourth-annual National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic will conclude with rowing and track and field competitions among recently injured armed services members at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. Other events include surfing at La Jolla Shores, sailing based at the San Diego Marriott Marina, kayaking at the Mission Bay Yacht Club and cycling at Tidelands Park in Coronado.
3. One donated liver saved the lives of two men in a first-of-its-kind surgical procedure performed in June at UCSD Medical Center, hospital officials announced Wednesday. According to UCSD Health Sciences, the donated liver was given on June 27 to Rafael Bolanos, a San Diego man suffering from a rare genetic disorder — methylmalonic acidemia — that causes a toxic buildup of amino acids in his body. The 28-year-old faced going into a coma and suffering brain damage without the operation, doctors said. Bolanos’ original liver was given that same day to 62-year-old Ramona real estate developer James O’Gara, who had primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease caused by scarring of the bile ducts. O’Gara’s body is capable of disposing of the amino acids, so the genetic disorder that plagued Bolanos won’t affect him, according to doctors.
